Sun Boxes is the title of sound installation by Craig Colorusso that is making its way to Artscape in Baltimore, Maryland in July. From July 15-17, visitors to “America’s largest free arts festival” will be able to check out what the fine people of Newburyport, Massachusetts got to see and hear at Maudslay State Park last fall:

Twenty independently operating speakers make up the installation, each powered by the sun and a PC board pre-loaded with a looping guitar note of variable length. The speakers are spread out to allow free movement amongst them, and because of the variation in note length and the varying distances of the speakers, no visitor hears exactly the same piece.

The video and the photos have piqued our interests, and we only wish we’d known about it sooner, so that we could have checked it out at Maudslay, which is only an hour or so from our house. But we’re sure it’ll be around again, as it seems to have been touring pretty relentlessly over the past year or three.

If you’re in Baltimore next month, definitely check it out.
