Five Great Games for the iPad or iPhone

by Jonathan Schlaffer

There are a lot of games on the App Store — a lot of games — and sorting out the best from the lot can be a difficult task. Here is a list of games that, in my opinion, cement the iPad as a valid gaming platform.

In no particular order:

Dead Space HD (non-HD available on iPhone)

It’s Dead Space, on your iPad. Those of you who have played this on the PC will feel right at home. If you haven’t, here’s a bit of background: you are a space miner extracting minerals from a base built on an asteroid and working as a double agent for an organization to sabotage it and then things start to go terribly, terribly wrong.  (This is not the same plot as presented on the PC; it varies slightly and is an extension of that game rather than being a prequel or sequel).

Rage HD (also on iPhone)

You kill zombies. You kill zombies in a game with great graphics. That’s really all there is to it, though you have no control over your movement in the game aside from aiming and running. You walk “automatically,” which gets frustrating because you can’t pause to scope the area out for items or to spot enemies. Nevertheless, it is a very fun and addicting game.

Real Racing HD (non-HD available for iPhone)

A fun racing game with good graphics: you race, you drive, it’s for racing game fans. (Note: iPad 2 users can grab Real Racing HD 2 for improved graphics and some extra goodies.)

N.O.V.A. HD and N.O.V.A. 2 HD

Basically these games are Halo clones for the iPad: the armor, vehicles, enemies, and your tag-along AI companion are almost exact copies from Halo, with very minor differences. Still, it’s fun all the same.

Infinity Blade (minor spoilers)

This game is amazing. Absolutely amazing. You’re a knight out to avenge your father’s death at the hands of the GodKing (really, that’s what he’s called). I wish there was more to explore in the game, but your ultimate objective is to upgrade your weapons, armor, and skills by playing several rounds of the game to defeat your enemy.

After you defeat the GodKing and purchase the Infinity Blade, you will have access to three areas in the Dungeon that contain the Deathless. Defeat them and then you must fight the Ancestor Guard and the Original Ancestor (which is a tough fight). You need special items from each previous boss fight to fully beat the game. Some people have experienced issues with getting the special items to drop. (Note: I restarted at Level 41, Bloodline 1, and did not use magic during the fights and managed to get the item drops).

For those of you with an iPad 2, the graphics will be slightly better with more effects and a few minor tweaks to the game.
