Five Second Critic 013: Pixies
In this episode, I ask Pixies a point-blank question about one of their most infamous songs.
Watched it and still confused? Here’s Five Second Critic for Dummies:
Released in March 1989 as a single, “Monkey Gone to Heaven” by Pixies was a song off the band’s major label debut Doolittle. In the song, singer Black Francis includes several references to numerology. And among these references are the pivotal lines, “If man is five/then the Devil is six/and God is seven.” The numbers used are all well and good, but the elusive Francis has left it to the listener to determine what the numbers one through four represent. And that just seems like too large a narrative omission to be forgiven. “What are one through four?” we ask. Apes? Dinosaurs? Aliens from another dimension sent to ruin the childhood dreams of Indiana Jones fans? Tell us, Black Francis! Tell us.
Please note that episodes of Five Second Critic air first on The Monday Morning Show.
