Five Second Critic 016: Ernest

In honor of the DVD release of Hey Vern, It’s Ernest!: The Complete Series, this week I share my thoughts on the lasting legacy of Mr. Jim Varney.

Watched it and still confused? Here’s Five Second Critic for Dummies:

Jim Varney was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Ernest P. Worrell, the protagonist of the aforementioned TV series and of several films.

He was also, however, the voice of Slinky Dog in Toy Story and Toy Story 2, a role far less annoying than Ernest, who was a contemporary of the equally annoying Pee Wee Herman.

So, for me, for whom the sounds of the Ernest and Pee Wee voices are like nails on a chalkboard—they were my brother’s thing, and consequently not mine—Jim Varney will always be the Slinky Dog.

How about you? Are there actors who are best known for one role that you remember most fondly for another?

Please note that episodes of Five Second Critic air first on The Monday Morning Show.
