Titus Andronicus Includes a Bukowski Sample in their Cover of “Birdhouse in Your Soul”

The band is named after The Lamentable Tragedy of Titus Andronicus, they’re covering a song by They Might Be Giants*, and they open their interpretation with a Charles Bukowski* sample? What’s not to love in this clip from the The A.V. Club? Well, take a look and you tell us.

The Bukowski sample is great, and there are flashes of brilliance in the performance itself, but we think Pitchfork was being kind when they called Titus Andronicus’s* take on “Birdhouse in Your Soul,”* “rough and ramshackle.” That said, there is something charming about these guys, who profess a love for the song in the pre-performance interview. What do you think: does charm ever fully make up for uneven delivery?
