Gwyneth Paltrow Loves Eazy-E?!?

It turns out that Gwyneth Paltrow has, according to no less an authority than Jay-Z, “extensive knowledge of hip-hop songs.” Who knew, right? In two brief but brilliant interviews uncovered by Kottke.org, Paltrow and Z take turns interviewing each other (here’s Z interviewing Paltrow and here’s Paltrow interviewing Z. A choice quote from Paltrow:

I went to LA the summer between my junior and senior year of high school and I discovered N.W.A which became my obsession. I was fascinated by lyrics as rhythm and how Dre had a such different cadence and perspective from say, Eazy-E, who I thought was one of the most ironic and brilliant voices hip-hop has ever had.

She goes on to pay homage to the grunge era from whence her popularity came — “[W]hen Nirvana came out, my mind was kind of blown.” — but to know that she’s a hip-hop geek at heart is really, really interesting. This is what we’re talking about when we say that everyone has something that they’re geeky about, but we might need to modify our credo to add that everyone probably has something they’re geeky about that you would not expect them to be geeky about.

What do you geek out about when no one’s looking?
