No Doubt and Paramore - The We Can’t Sing Live Tour?
I have an immense amount of love for both No Doubt and Paramore, so please don’t take this the wrong way if you’re a fan. Here goes: I don’t think Gwen Stefani or Hayley Williams sing all that well in a live setting. This is what makes me so apprehensive about the news that those two bands will tour together this summer, alongside one of my other favorite bands from recent years, The Sounds. On paper, this pairing sounds great. It makes me want to bring up iTunes and whip together a No Doubt/Paramore playlist right now. No Doubt were one of my favorite bands of the 90s, and Paramore have become, despite the fact that I am way too old to like them, one of my favorites of the 00s. But here’s the thing: I’m only really interested in their studio recordings. Every live recording I’ve heard of either band features solid instrumental work, but somewhat shoddy vocals.
Now, this is not me saying that I think they’re using Auto-Tune and pitch correction to some ridiculous amount. I just think that these are two singers who produce their best work in the controlled environment of the studio, and who forget how to sing well the moment they get on stage.
