Stuckeyville’s Last Stand

One of my favorite shows on television, Ed may be done for after this season. The season finale was tonight though, and if it turns out it was the series finale as well I can’t think of a better way for the show to go out.

If I think of Ed like I think of a comic book miniseries, I can get used to the idea that it’s over. In tonight’s episode they managed to tie up the major plotline that’s run through the show for the past three years - the courtship of Ed and Carol. And they did it extremely well too. Of course they were going to end up together. Who wouldn’t have seen that coming? But the way they got there left me feeling more satisifed than I’ve felt with a TV show in a long while.

Now, what really disappoints me is that I don’t think we’ve ever seen a show transition from the “single-guy pining for love” scenario to the “couple making it work” scenario. I think Ed could accomplish this. If it does come back next season, don’t make the mistake that Friends and so many other shows make. Don’t break Ed and Carol up every six episodes just so that you can spend the next six getting them back together. Let them stay together and explore what happens when people stay together.

Anyway, I would like to see that.
