Not Much To Report
I finished re-reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire while I was on vacation. Therefore, I began this week with nothing to read during my regular lunchtime reading hour. It wasn’t a big deal yesterday since circumstance forced me to eat out for lunch, but today I needed something. Unfortunately, I’d left the picking of a book to the last minutes before I was due to head out the door. Fortunately, a book did stick out at me from among the zillions on our shelves.
I bought a copy of the Selected Stories of Andre Dubus just over two years ago at a newsstand/bookstore in the San Francisco airport Stephanie and I stopped over at on our way to Hawaii. I read the stories in the first section of the collection over the next couple of months but then I lost interest and put it aside. Other books came into my conciousness, the Harry Potter books in particular.
Today, as I read the first part of Dubus’s “The Pretty Girl” I wondered how I could have ever put aside this work. David was the first to introduce me to the man’s writing, back in college. He had us read “Townies” in one of our fiction classes. I was captivated by the idea that there was a writer of some renown writing about my backyard, even about my college in some stories.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the collection over the next couple of weeks as I await the arrival of the next Harry Potter book.
The rest of the day was blase as ever. Not much to report.
