Waiting To Exhale
The following reflection was written in 2003, when I was between 25 and 26 years old.
I picked Louann up at her place in Haverhill and then we went to see a flick at the Lawrence Showcase Cinemas. I don’t believe that dinner was involved, though it might have been. What I’m sure was involved, however, was a film that was definitely not a date movie. We saw Waiting To Exhale, and for those of you who have never seen it I can sum up the story in one small sentence — Men are evil.
I think Louann was slightly embarrassed to have picked the movie when it started becoming apparent that the whole thing was about how every man the characters met was the spawn of Satan. We made it through the movie though, and then we went out to my car.
Much like the relationship that was beginning to fall apart a year before, this one truly began in my car after the show. It began with kissing and a question — will you go out with me? It began with an answer, a yes. It probably shouldn’t have begun at all, but it did. For a while it was even wonderful.
