Vacation @ Magic Kingdom II

The following reflection was written in 2003, when I was between 25 and 26 years old.

Dad spent the day with us one day and then didn’t go out with us that night. That night Mom, John, and me went back to the Magic Kingdom to do some of the rides we hadn’t done before. I recall a visit to Mickey’s Toon Town and riding on some of the rides in Fantasy Land. Most of all though, I remember John and I and our rides on two of the three ‘mountain’ rides in the park.

We didn’t do Thunder Mountain (I think that’s what it’s called) that year. We did do Splash Mountain though and that was really fun. The glorified flume would’ve been a favorite ride of Mom’s if it weren’t for the steep drops. The Br’er Rabbit and Br’er Fox story going on throughout was just the sort of thing she would’ve liked. We kinda wished she could’ve come along and then gotten off just before the big drop.

The real experience of the evening though, was when John and I got stuck on Space Mountain. We’d waited in line forever. Mom was standing outside. When John and I finally got on the ride, we’d barely descended into the thing when it stopped and then all the lights were on and people were walking up and down the little staircase just to the side of us.

They never gave us the option to get out. For at least half an hour, it was as if there was no progress at all. We had no idea what was wrong with the ride but they were still going to make us ride it. I think that added to the scariness of it.

Meanwhile, outside Mom is seeing people come out of the ride and she stops one and they tell her that it broke down and she’s left wondering what the hell is up with us. We eventually did ride the ride and it was great, but when we came out Mom was sure glad to see us.
