Vacation @ Magic Kingdom I
The following reflection was written in 2003, when I was between 25 and 26 years old.
It was to be our last real family vacation. My parents had asked John and I if we were interested in it earlier in the year or perhaps even the year before. I was headed off to college after all and John would be headed off to college a couple of years after that. This was our last chance to get away as the family we had always been. It was a great idea and I’m very, very glad we did it.
We flew to Orlando for a trip that would take us to both Disney World and the homes of two relatives in just over a week. The adventure began in the Magic Kingdom and walking down Main Street USA again as a young man instead of a kid was a completely different experience. Walking down the street with my family is something I will never forget.
There was a Mascot Voting competition going on. It was Winnie the Pooh versus Captain Hook. And, I do remember that we took the time to vote for our favorites.
I bought yellow and green Donald Duck tye-die t-shirt at one point. I was wearing it on several occasions. I don’t recall if I was wearing it when we actually met Donald Duck though, at a character breakfast. I do recall that I had my picture taken with Minnie, that there was a picture involving John and Pluto, and a picture involving Dad and Donald. Donald is my Dad’s middle name so he’s always had an affinity for the duck.
My memories of the vacation are scattered, as you will see as you move through these next few entries. However, the thing that sticks out in my mind, and you’ll forgive me for hammering on this point again, is that I really enjoyed being there with my family. It seemed as if it were the only natural way to end my last summer before college.
