Random thoughts about databases occurred to me today. In thinking of ways for me to more easily keep track of everything that’s going on in my novel and in the extended universe of short stories that connect to it, I got to thinking that I’d like to have a relational database that I can refer to if I’m ever wondering what the hell I’ve written down so far. I mean, most of it is in my head and my head is a reliable source some of the time, but it would be nice to have a visual representation of this crazy story I’m spinning.
I got to thinking about on random visits to Stephen King websites which were speaking about how all of his books eventually relate back to The Dark Tower series. There are all sorts of dates and people to keep straight in the universe I’m creating and sometimes I have to pause for a really long time while I’m writing to remember what’s going on.
Of course this desire to create a database could be the latest in a long series of things I’ve come up with to avoid doing what I actually need to be doing (the writing).
Still, I wonder if I would use Access or if I could just use an Excel spreadsheet or if there’s some special program out there that would help me out. There seems to be a program out there for everything nowadays, right?
Anyway, that’s what I was thinking about for part of the day today. I went to work and Kenmore Square was still standing so that’s that. Not much to ponder on that front. I thought I was going to be walking through rubble and I was not. It was perfectly peaceful.
