Pumpkins to Reform?!?
Jon first alerted me to this strange bit of music news, via his site, and I’ve been pondering how I feel about the reformation of the Smashing Pumpkins ever since. In case you’re behind on the situation, former Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan took out a full-page ad [PDF link] in support of his recently released solo effort, TheFutureEmbrace, in which he mentioned that he wanted to get the now-defunct Pumpkins back together.
Part of me is with Jon all the way: bring ‘em back in any form possible, and who cares who the bassist and the guitar player are as long as we get Billy and Jimmy (the drummer). I never got to see the Pumpkins the first time, and it’s one of those bands I really regret never having experienced live. So, I’ll take whatever I can get. That’s me, on the one hand.
But, on the other hand, I’m left wondering: if it isn’t the four of them (Billy, Jimmy, James, and D’arcy), if it is just Billy and Jimmy and two other people, isn’t that just Zwan? If all he wants back is Jimmy, the name, and his songs, why did he break up the Pumpkins in the first place? Why did he form a new band, under a new name, for one record? I’m sorry. I’m confused.
Anyway, it’s a crazy story. Just last month, Billy told MTV News, “You won’t see the four Smashing Pumpkins onstage again”. What’s changed, if anything? How’s it all going to work out? Your guess is as good as mine.
