The first official photograph of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises has made its way online, but the key question seems to be whether or not this is also a photo of Catwoman.
Catwoman, as you may or may not know, is the sobriquet of the cat burglar Selina Kyle, a sometime antagonist and sometime lover of Bruce Wayne, the man most of us know more affectionately as Batman. And, as /Film points out, the people making the film The Dark Knight Rises have been very careful to make that distinction. The character Hathaway is playing is always referred to as Selina Kyle, and never as Catwoman. What does that mean?
Well, the costume Hathaway is wearing here is far more reminiscent of the pre-Batman costume that Bruce Wayne wears in Batman Begins than it is of any version of Catwoman we've ever seen. Perhaps The Dark Knight Rises will treat Selina Kyle in the same way that The Dark Knight treated Harvey Dent. Maybe this is her origin story. Maybe this is how she becomes Catwoman. Will Batman having anything to do with it? Will Bruce Wayne? Or maybe Bane? It'll be interesting to see how this comes together.
What do you think?
