I interviewed author Nicole Mello (Phantasmagoria) for the season finale of Lesley University’s Why We Write podcast, and you should definitely take a listen to it.

Nicole is a former student of mine and we had a great time chatting about self-publishing, Dolly Parton, and

One of them is… it’s these two women in like the 70s who are like ghost-hunting lesbians. Which is what I’ve always wanted from a ghost-hunting story: a ghost-hunting lesbian.

But it was mostly me watching movies like The Conjuring and The Exorcist and being like, “This would be better if… they were gay.”

…the things that I consume, I want to see myself in them. So it’s a lot of me taking things and being like “What if people I know were there?”

It makes me smile to listen back to it now, because Nicole’s answer is a fantastic summation of where I’m at as a writer, teacher, and administrator. As I’ve been saying here on Clarkwoods for a while, writing these days is all about writing the story only you can write.
